Happy Friday!
It's so easy to get in the habit of using the "auto" mode on your camera. Life is happening so fast and you don't have time to think through an exposure. But, once you learn the basics of a camera, it will be like second nature.
For the next five weeks, I'll be talking about some of the main settings on a camera: aperture, shutter speed and ISO. Also, i'll be explaining all those numbers on a camera lens.
Let's start with my favorite——aperture. To me, it makes the difference between a snapshot and a portrait. I could go into all the technical aspects of aperture. But since i'm a visual person, let me show you some examples.
When you have your camera set on:
F/16
What is in focus: everything
What do you use this for: action shots
F/5.6
What is in focus: the front half of the photo. The background is usually slightly blurry
What do you use this for: group shots. That way, everyone's face is in focus.
F/1.4
What is in focus: only one thing (usually the person's face you are shooting.) The background is really blurry.
What do you use this for: solo portraits or whenever you want to make a statement. (This is my fav setting!!)
While it would be amazing to leave your camera always on F/1.4, you have to take into account what lens you have, how much light you have and what your shutter speed/ISO are on. More on that next week!
Your homework this week:
Set your camera on aperture priority (A or AV setting). Then set your aperture to the lowest it will go (F/1.4, F/1.8, F/2.8). Start shooting and keep me posted on your findings!
xo!
